چکیده

Recent events have illustrated the Internet’s vulnerability to both denial of service (DoS) attacks and flash crowds in which links (or servers) in the network become severely congested. In both DoS attacks and flash crowds, the congestion is neither due to a single flow, nor due to a general increase in traffic, but to a well-defined subset of the traffic — an aggregate. This paper proposes aggregate-based congestion control (ACC) to protect the network from such aggregates. Our approach involves mechanisms for detecting and controlling high-bandwidth aggregates at the congested router, and a cooperative mechanism pushback, using which these aggregates can be controlled upstream. These mechanisms, while certainly not a panacea, should provide some relief from flash crowds and flooding-style DoS attacks.

Internet Congestion Control Using Fuzzy Integral Controller

Until now, internet congestion problem cannot be completely resolved. The main cause of the internet congestion is the control mechanism for dividing network capacity does not work effectively. Thus, the amount of data through the network can exceed the network capacity. Various studies based on the control system theory have been done to overcome this problem. This paper specifically examines ...

Delay-based Congestion Control: Sampling and Correlation Issues Revisited

In this paper we revisit the commonly voiced concern that low correlation between measured delay and network congestion means that delay may be fundamentally flawed as a signal for congestion control. Our main contribution is to demonstrate that in fact what matters for congestion control is the aggregate behaviour of the flows sharing a link. Hence, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, while any giv...

TCP trunking for bandwidth management of aggregate traffic

TCP trunking is a novel way of applying TCP congestion control to bandwidth management of aggregate traffic. This is accomplished by setting up a separate TCP connection to probe network congestion, and then using the TCP connection’s congestion control to regulate the bandwidth usage of the aggregate traffic. TCP trunking offers several advantages in managing bandwidth of aggregate traffic. It...

Aggregate Rate Control for Efficient and Practical Congestion Management

Active queue management (AQM) promises to overcome the current limitations of end-host only congestion control by providing congestion feedback information before router queue buffers overflow. Many emerging AQM approaches use proportional integral (PI) controller design because of PI’s simplicity and effectiveness. Unfortunately, these promising AQMs still face a critical deployment challenge ...

Rate-Adjustment Algorithm for Aggregate TCP Congestion-Control

The TCP congestion-control mechanism is an algorithm designed to probe the available bandwidth of the network path that TCP packets traverse. However, it is wellknown that the TCP congestion-control mechanism does not perform well on networks with a large bandwidth-delay product due to the slow dynamics in adapting its congestion window, especially for short-lived flows. One promising solution ...

Optimal Utility-based Internal Congestion Control in a Cluster-based Router

Optimal utility-based congestion control is an optimization approach to congestion control problems where the objective is to maximize the aggregate source utility over their transmission rates. It has been used to analyze Internet congestion control schemes. In this paper, we develop a discrete congestion control scheme to manage congestion internal to a cluster-based router. We simulate our p...
